North Carolina Dept of Health and Human Services is Hiring a Specimen Processing Technician Near Wake, NC

Description of Work

Within the North Carolina State Laboratory of Public Health (NCSLPH), this position serves as Central Accessioning (CA) Medical Lab Technician in the Central Accessioning (CA) Unit of the Quality Assurance Branch. Under the supervision of the CA Supervisor, the Technician provides specimen accessioning for clinical and environmental specimens submitted to the State Laboratory of Public Health (SLPH).
The Med Lab Technician will ensure all specimens submitted for testing are in accordance with regulatory and NCSLPH acceptance guidelines. The Technician will also serve as a point of contact between clerical/data entry, customer service, the mailroom/receiving department, the laboratory units, and submitters to ensure quality specimen handling is achieved.

CA Med Lab Technician duties:
  • Receive and evaluate specimen acceptance
  • Accession acceptable specimen for multiple tests daily
  • Utilize LIMs system to accurately label and locate specimen
  • Communicate (by phone) with other health care providers daily to resolve specimen problems
  • Maintain daily specimen receipt logs/courier logs
  • Adhere to the policies and procedures set forth by NCSLPH
  • Ensure CA area is appropriately stocked with supplies

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

  • Knowledge of good laboratory practices and laboratory specimen handling.
  • Ability to work in a team environment and independently with minimum supervision.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to be versatile in dealing with a wide range of specimen requirements, conflicting laboratory demands, and working closely with different employee personalities.
  • Good telephone and verbal communication skills.
Management Preferences:
  • High level of attention to detail and excellent organizational skills.
  • Demonstrates the ability to adapt in a continuously changing environment.
Physical Requirements:
  • Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negotiable amount of force constantly to move objects.
  • Requires use of arm and/or leg controls in exertion for forces greater than that for sedentary work.
  • Repetitious tasks and tasks requiring manual dexterity.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Associate's degree in medical technology from an appropriately accredited institution
OR
completion of a certified laboratory assistant course in medical technology or a comparable course from an accredited institution;
OR
High school or General Educational Development diploma and two years of medical laboratory experience;
OR
an equivalent combination of education and experience.
